March 13, 2019

Lesley Conner is a writer and managing editor for Apex Magazine. She spends her days pestering book reviewers, proofreading, wrangling slush, doling out contracts, and chatting about books, writing, and anything else that crosses her mind on the @ApexBookCompany Twitter account. Most of her nights are spent with a good book and a glass of wine. Her alternative history horror novel, The Weight of Chains, was published by Sinister Grin Press. To discover all her secrets follow her on Twitter at @LesleyConner.

In early February, we asked you - our readers - to vote for your favorite story and cover from 2018. Since then, a lot has happened, but you voted and now it is time to announce the winners!

The Story of the Year for 2018 is "A Witch's Guide to Escape: A Practical Compendium of Portal Fantasies" by Alix E. Harrow. "A Witch's Guide to Escape" was published in Apex Magazine issue 105. We're excited that not only did you vote Alix's story Story of the Year for 2018, but it has also been nominated for the Nebula Award for Short Fiction. If you have not had the chance to read this amazing story yet, you can do so here.

The Cover of the Year for 2018 is Godwin Akpan's piece from Apex Magazine issue 114. Godwin is an amazing artist, and I'm thrilled to say he is the cover artist for Maurice Broaddus's upcoming novel Pimp My Airship, as well as the cover for Apex Magazine issue 120, so be sure to keep your eyes open for those. They are gorgeous!

Thank you to everyone who took the time to vote in our polls, and for your patience in waiting for us to announce the winners!
