When Bianca Spriggs and I first sat down to start talking about the idea of Undead: A Poetry Anthology of Ghosts, Ghouls, and More, the anthology came to life and boldly announced itself by the title. In a flash the vision became clear, and we were overjoyed with excitement about the project.
The idea all along belonged to Jason Sizemore, the noble and hardworking editor and owner of Apex. For a few years he had wanted a volume of speculative poetry, and the right moment had finally arrived, both for the press and the editors of the anthology.
We created and circulated a call for submissions and the work poured in. Bianca and I, both separately and together, read every piece, selecting the best poems to include in the book—you might think of these as the body parts of Undead. Then we used these parts to assemble the body itself, the way it is now, with its flow of energy and layering of ideas.
We are very pleased with the results. It was a tremendous pleasure to read everyone’s work and to arrange the characters of the selected poems into a curious line that excites the reader’s imagination.
Today we are happy to say that the Undead anthology is very much alive and available to all who want to take the journey through the worlds of the dead, the living, and the spaces in between.
