Hey Apex Magazine fans, I wanted to give you a heads-up that I will be a virtual panelist for Tulkon 2021. The event is physically occurring in Tulsa, OK, but due to the pandemic, much of the convention will be happening online.
Here is all the information you need if you’d like to participate!
EVENT: Tulkon 2021
WHERE: Online and the The Doubletree Warren Place in Tulsa, OK.
My schedule (all times listed in CST):
Friday – Opening Ceremonies (5:00 pm)
Saturday – Using SFF as Sandboxes for Ideas on Politics and Society (9:00 am)
Saturday – Ask an Editor Anything! (Noon)
Saturday – Utopia, Dystopia, and the Default (4:00 pm)
Sunday – With Fans Like These, Who Needs Enemies (9:00 am)
Sunday – Closing Cermonies (4:00 pm)
The convention will provide Zoom information to registrants. AFAIK folks on-site and online will be able to participate in the panel discussions.
I had been invited to be their literary guest-of-honor by one of the convention’s organizers, Scott Richardson, months before the pandemic outbreak. I have been looking forward to attending. They have a Whisky Tasting panel, for chrissakes! Unfortunately, due to COVID-19 concerns, I have elected to stay home. I received my second Pfizer vaccination only yesterday and didn’t want to risk catching COVID after spending 13 months in lockdown and being so close to full immunization. I begged Scott to delay the convention by two weeks, but alas, he could not upend the entire event only for me.
While I’m a bit…nervous…that Tulkon 2021 is going forward with the on-site convention, I do feel that Scott and the Tulkon team will do their best to provide a safe experience for attendees. I appreciate the tough decision they had to make. I also appreciate that they have been flexible in accommodating to my desire to ride the lockdown for another few weeks.
Having said all that, I encourage you to consider their online panels and pick up a membership to the convention. Scott Richardson is a great guy who has made the best of a difficult situation!
