We’re heading into the last 24 hours of our Kickstarter, and we want to take a moment to thank every single one of you who has backed us and shared our campaign. We’ve had a lot of fun organizing the backer goals, stretch goals, and add-ons for this Kickstarter, and we hope you’re as excited as we are about our 2023 publishing cycle. But before we get to that, we’ve still got a lot of great things in store for 2022–join us for our September events!

Issue 133

Releasing at the beginning of September, Issue 133 is packed full of sad and surreal stories. Authors Benjamin Parzybok, Sergey Gerasimov, Paul Jessup, Leah Ning, Jon Hansen, and Derrick Boden fill out our original fiction. Nonfiction by Brandon Crilly and Martha Wells, and reprints from Danny Cherry and ZigZag Claybourne complete this incredible issue.

Watch for our new releases at www.apex-magazine.com.

Goodbye Microfiction! Hello Flash Fiction!

One of our stretch goals for the 2023 Kickstarter was to add two flash fiction pieces to each issue of Apex Magazine. Beginning in January 2023, this is a reality!

And this means we have a very special announcement… We’d like to congratulate our Associate Editor Rebecca E. Treasure on her promotion to Flash Fiction Editor! Rebecca has been the editor of our microfiction contest since May of 2021, and has chosen some amazing winners from the submissions, including two selected for a 2021 Best Microfiction anthology.

Beginning in November 2022, our monthly microfiction contest is changing to a monthly flash fiction contest. Patrons will still have the opportunity to vote on and view the theme before the general public. Themes will now be chosen at the end of the month and announced to Patrons on the 1st of each month. Submissions will be open to the public on the 7th of each month.

For example, the poll for the November theme will post on September 20th, and close on September 30th. Patrons will receive access to the winning theme on October 1st, and the post will unlock to the public on October 7th. Submissions will close on October 31st at midnight.

Winners will be published as exclusives on our Patreon before appearing in Apex Magazine.

Podcast Episode 93

Our September Podcast will be “On the Sunlit Side of Venus” by Benjamin Parzybok.

Check out Episode 92, “Your Space Between”, by Marie Croke.

September Book of the Month

Our September Book of the Month will be Greener Pastures, by Michael Wehunt.

From the round-robin, found-footage nightmare of “October Film Haunt: Under the House” to the jazz-soaked “The Devil Under the Maison Blue,” selected for both The Year’s Best Dark Fantasy & Horror and Year’s Best Weird Fiction, these beautifully crafted, emotionally resonant stories speak of the unknown encroaching upon the familiar, the inscrutable power of grief and desire, and the thinness between all our layers. Where nature rubs against small towns, in mountains and woods and bedrooms, here is strangeness seen through a poet’s eye.

The author will be joining us on our Discord for an AMA on Wednesday, September 28th at 5pm eastern.

On the Patreon: Editor/Patron AMA, Social, and Write In

New for Alien Cyborgs ($8/month) and higher tiers!

Starting the 15th of September, we’ll be hosting a free, exclusive, monthly Q&A and write-in with one of our editors or one of our Apex Book Company authors.

The first of these will be September 15th when you can join Jason Sizemore for a 30 minute Q&A, followed by a 30 minute writing sprint, and closing with a 30 minute free-discussion social. Ask your burning questions about Apex Magazine, short stories and novels, genre fiction in general, favorite forms of potatoes and licorice, and more!

Our editor-in-chief and the Apex Overlord himself, Jason Sizemore, promises to answer all questions! Registration will be made available to all Patrons at the applicable tiers.

Microfiction Contest

The microfiction theme for September is POTATOES. Submissions are open until August 31, midnight central US time.

Check out our July winner, “Over my Bones,” by Dana Vickerson, here.
