2022 is off to a great start at Apex. We hope it is the same for all our subscribers, authors, patrons, and friends. We’re looking forward to another year of publishing amazing fiction and nonfiction.

February kicks off the year with a lot of fun events and, of course, great fiction!

Awards Eligibility

Nominations are open for the Nebula and Hugo Awards. The stories listed in our post are eligible in the short fiction categories of most major SF/F awards.

Additionally, Jason Sizemore and Lesley Conner are eligible for the Hugo Award category of Best Editor (Short Form). They’re a co-editing team, so if you’d like to nominate Jason and Lesley, please nominate them together.

Apex Magazine is considered a professional magazine, so we are not eligible for Best Semiprozine Hugo category.

Issue 129

We released Issue 129 at the beginning of January. So far, we’ve released some great stories, including “It Happened in ‘Loontown” by Lavie Tidhar, “City Lights” by Yilun Fan, translated by S. Qiouyi Lu, “Sheri, At This Very Moment” by Bianca Sayan, and “What Una Loves” by Rich Larson. In February, we’ll be releasing “Lamia” (available 2/1) by Cristina Jurado,

translated by Monica Louzon, and “The Cure for Loneliness” (available 2/8) by M. Shaw.

Apex Books Website

Launching February 1, check out the new look over at Apex Books. We’ve revamped the entire site and are looking forward to our new releases later this year! Stay tuned for details.

Snap Judgment Episode 3

On Sunday, January 23, we hosted our third episode of Snap Judgment, the quickfire show where E-i-Cs Jason Sizemore and Lesley Conner are joined by an illustrious guest–in this case, Arley Sorg of Fantasy Magazine–to offer feedback on the first 250 words of submitted manuscripts. Always packed full of craft advice and practical tips, we’ll have our fourth episode in April. Check out the replay here: Apex Magazine Presents Snap Judgement #3

Microfiction Contest

The microfiction theme for February is broken. Submissions are open until January 30, midnight central time.

Check out our December winner, “First Snow”, by Annie McAndrew, here.

Discord Happenings

As always, we have fun and community on our Discord: our monthly game ‘night’ on February 17th at 1pm Eastern, writing craft chat and reading recommendations, and lots of pets and places.
