Catherine Denvir is an artist whose career path has taken her from illustration — a vocation in which her work appears in many publications — into painting to satisfy a growing fascination for the media, while working with a multitude of painting disciplines.
‘Why bother?’
It may seem innocuous, but this question is one of the most prevalent — and sometimes most damaging — when it comes to social activism. In fandom activism specifically, it can be a death knell to any campaign that seeks better and more diverse representation in its entertainment media.
Jeff Ward is a digital illustrator with an eye for painting fantastic worlds and characters. He’s done work for various big house comic book publishers, as well as game developers and magazines. Apex Magazine is very fortunate to have his work ‘Planet Base’ grace the cover of this issue.
Cyril Rolando is a digital artist located in southern France. Although illustration is not his main profession, Cyril’s artistic renderings can easily capture the imagination of any viewer.
APEX MAGAZINE: Can you tell us a little bit about yourself as an illustrator?
ASHLEY MACKENZIE: I’m a Canadian illustrator based out of Toronto, Ontario. I graduated from the Ontario College of Art and Design last year and I’ve been freelancing ever since.
APEX MAGAZINE: Can you tell us a little bit about yourself as an illustrator?
TORY HOKE: Sure. I showed aptitude early and got encouraged. My heart goes out to anybody who likes to draw and never got that encouragement.
I grew up in the suburbs of Connecticut, where I drew pictures on every sheet of paper and homework I could find. I went to Muhlenberg College in Allentown, PA, and earned a B.A. in Studio Art with a minor in English, and then went to the Minneapolis College of Art and Design and finished my post–baccalaureate degree in Illustration.
Mehrdad Isvandi came to Apex’s attention on Tumblr, where his work stands out in both attention to detail and innovative themes. We are pleased that he had the time for this interview with Loraine Sammy.
