September is drawing to a close, the weather is cooling off, and spooky season is here! Apex in October is full of the strange, the surreal, the shocking, and the beautiful.

Issue 126

First up is issue 126. This issue was made possible by our 2020 Kickstarter backers and features Indigenous Futurists, which releases October 5th. With new fiction from Pamela Rentz, Ted Van Alst, Tiffany Morris, Kevin Wabaunsee, Jessie Loyer, and Norris Black, non-fiction from Sloane Leong, a piece of classic fiction from Rebecca Roanhorse, and this gorgeous cover from Megan Feheley, you won't want to miss this issue.

Annual Holiday Horrors Flash Fiction Contest

On October 1 the submissions portal for our Holiday Horrors Flash Contest will open.

This year we're getting in touch with our horrific roots with the theme of Halloween. Tell us tales of trick-or-treating gone wrong, monsters lurking in the darkness to grab kiddies on their way home, or teens who accidentally raise the dead.

Halloween is the scariest holiday of them all, so finding a way to twist it into something new and exciting will be a trick, and will definitely give us all a treat!

Apex Book Company Scary Books Sale

On the subject of horror, for the month of October, all horror titles at Apex Books will be 30% off. Grab one (or five) of the great horror titles Apex Books has to offer to really get into the spooky spirit!

Limited time Halloween Merch

We've also got a Halloween merchandise special for the month: CANDY ALIEN HEAD SOCKS! You read that correctly. Grab a pair before they're gone!

Patreon Book of the Month

Our October Patreon Book of the Month is Plague Birds by Jason Sanford. That will go out to our bookish aliens the first week of October. Plague Birds is the epic tale of a young woman betrayed into becoming one of the future’s hated judges and executioners, with a killer AI bonded to her very blood. A genre-bending mix of science fiction and dark fantasy, Plague Birds is Jeff VanderMeer's Dead Astronauts meets the Murderbot Diaries by Martha Wells. Weird and epic and dark.

Discord Kaffeeklatsch

On Sunday, October 17th, at 1pm EDT there will be a kaffeeklatsch on the Apex Discord. Wrap up in your favorite comfy blanket and a mug of something that warms you and join us to chat with the editors about whatever comes up! It's always a good time.

Game Night with Apex

Later that week, we'll be having our monthly game 'night' on the Discord at 1pm EDT, Thursday, October 21st. Code Names is "a game of guessing which codenames (i.e., words) in a set are related to a hint-word given by another player." Explore the weird ways our brains connect words and help your team to victory! Join the Apex editors and fellow Apex fans for the fun

Snap Judgment #2

On Sunday, October 31st at 1pm EDT we'll be having our second Snap Judgment panel. Our guest judge is Nightmare Magazine editor-in-chief Wendy Wagner! Go here for details about how to submit your first page for snap feedback from Jason, Lesley, and Wendy.

October's Patreon Microfiction Contest

The microfiction theme for October is Harvest/Dark Harvest. Submissions are open until September 30. Check out the September piece, "Like Any Other" by Jenna Hanchey.

That's about it for October with Apex, but there's always fun happenings on the Discord like games, writing discussions, Lesley's Lawless Book Club, and more.
